FP7 Basics

The Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development – FP7 – is the EU’s main tool for funding research activities. It is designed to stimulate research and science related collaborations between the Member States, Associated countries and Third – countries.

FP7 has a budget over 50 billion euro for the seven years of duration (2007-2013) and funding is available for research related activities. Organizations can access the funding by responding to call for proposals, published at the main website, Cordis http://cordis.europa.eu/home_en.html

FP7 offers many opportunities for funding but it is essential to get a basic understanding of the programme before applying. It may seem confusing to begin with, but do not despair; this section provides the basic information and the EUINEC FP7 e-training will give you the necessary knowledge to get started.

FP7 Structure

FP7 is composed of specific programmes; all with their own work programme and budget. The four main programme are; Cooperation, Ideas, People and Capacities finance different types of research related actions. Each specific programme is further divided into thematic areas, together covering main areas of EU research policy for thematic and horizontal aspects.

In addition, the non-nuclear research activities of the joint Research Centre(JCR) are grouped under a specific programme with individual budget allocation, and the Euratom research activities are carried out under a separate treaty and with a separate budget.
